Achieving high-fidelity quantum control over trapped ion systems requires preparing these systems in their motional ground states. Traditional Doppler cooling methods have their limitations, typically only cooling atoms down to the motional states with n≈10. To overcome this limitation and achieve motional ground states, the application of sub-Doppler techniques becomes indispensable. This presentation will explore the application of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) for achieving ground-state cooling of calcium ions. Additionally, the talk will introduce a shelving technique specifically designed to characterize the motional states of ions following ground-state cooling.
